Peter Seychell
Contemporary Maltese Painter
Exploring surreal landscapes and environmental narratives through evolving painterly expression.
Biography
Peter Seychell is a Maltese self-taught artist who returned to painting over the past seven years after a professional career in the pharmaceutical industry, from which he is now semi-retired. Originally trained as a draughtsman, his technical background continues to inform the structural integrity of his compositions.
Seychell first exhibited his work in 2022 in a joint exhibition titled Nuances at Gemelli Gallery, alongside fellow artist Carmel Bonello, whom he regards as a mentor. The exhibition was curated by Joseph Agius.
His first solo exhibition, Bahh (2023), curated by the late Mark Mallia, was also held at Gemelli Gallery. This was followed by Room for Speculation (2024), curated by Melanie Erixon at Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq in Mqabba. In January 2025, his solo exhibition Wastelands, curated by Dr. Charlene Vella, was held at The Phoenicia Hotel.
Although relatively new to the contemporary art scene, Seychell has been notably prolific. His practice explores two painterly approaches — one highly detailed and the other more gestural — unified by a recurring depiction of imagined, surreal worlds. These constructed environments serve as a platform to address the environmental plight of Malta and broader global concerns.
Following his most recent exhibitions, his work has moved toward a more abstract orientation, where expression, texture, and painterly technique have become central to his artistic exploration.
