Ryan Falzon is a Maltese visual artist and published author known for his abrasive, playful visual language and narrative-driven works that merge image and text.
Biography
Ryan Falzon (b. 1988) is a Maltese visual artist, published author, and art educator. His practice is characterised by an abrasive yet playful visual language, often constructing layered narratives through the arrangement of disparate images and texts in a collage-like format.
Since 2009, Falzon has participated in numerous solo and collective exhibitions in Malta and across Europe. His body of work produced between 2016 and 2019 has become a significant point of reference within contemporary Maltese political and socially engaged art.
From 2020 onwards, Falzon shifted focus toward painting plants and domestic gardens, exploring themes of biophilia, intimacy, and post-pandemic psychological conditioning.
In 2023, he obtained a Master of Arts in Fine Arts with distinction from the University of Malta.
Recognition & Projects
In 2014, Falzon was selected by Absolut Vodka for the global Transform Today project. Between 2013 and 2015, he co-managed the Xarolla Windmill Project, a collective initiative supporting emerging multidisciplinary artists.
His literary work has gained national acclaim. His debut novel SAJF, published in 2022, has been described by critics as a defining voice of the Maltese millennial generation. The novel was shortlisted for the 2023 National Book Prize and, in 2024, Falzon was awarded the National Prize for Best Emergent Author. He was also selected to participate in the European literary residency programme Ulysses’ Shelter.
Literary Work
Alongside his visual art practice, Falzon has published numerous short texts since 2011. His novel SAJF marked a pivotal moment in his multidisciplinary career, positioning him as both a visual and literary voice within contemporary Maltese culture.
